“PreMature Menopause” What Can You Do About It?
The average age of menopause is 52. But some women reach menopause in their late 30s or early 40s. And this is called early menopause or premature menopause. So if you are one of those women who has reached menopause really early, well, what do you do about it?
Let's discuss that! There are many reasons why a woman may reach menopause early.
Her ovaries were removed during a hysterectomy or due to cancer or because of a gene mutation.
Certain medications
Viruses
Genetic or autoimmune causes
Unknown
Whatever the reason, the bottom line is that the ovaries are not producing as much estrogen as they should be. And this is having a negative impact on your heart health, your brain health and your bone health.
So if you're somebody whose periods stopped at 40, you should be talking to your doctor about getting some menopause hormone therapy so you can get all of the benefits of estrogen all the way up into your early 50s when you would have reached menopause anyway.
Now, if you're having symptoms of menopause like hot flashes and sweats and brain fog and all of those things that women commonly complain about, then you're more likely to bring this up to your doctor. However, there are some women who reach early menopause and just stop getting their periods and they don't have any of these other symptoms. So they slip under the radar. You should really mention this to your gynecologist so you can be getting the best treatment possible so you can protect your bones, your brain, and your heart.
