How Do I Know When I am Ovulating?

This is a really important question, especially for those who are trying to conceive and have a baby.

So let's go over three ways in which we can figure this out.

  1. If you are somebody with a regular cycle, you're ovulating somewhere in the middle of it.

For example, if you have a 30 day cycle, you are probably ovulating around day 15-16. If you have a 28 day cycle, you're probably ovulating somewhere between day twelve and 14. Typically, your period occurs two weeks after you ovulate. So if you are somebody with regular cycles, it's pretty easy to figure out when you're ovulating. It's usually right in the middle of it or two weeks before your period.

  2. You can figure out when you ovulate by using the basal body temperature. Now, an important thing to know about the basal body temperature is that by the time that temperature rises, you have already ovulated. But it can help give you a ballpark of what day you're ovulating if you actually track this over a few months.

So what is this all about? You have a thermometer next to your bed, and when you wake up in the morning, before you start doing anything else, you're going to take your temperature and write it down. And when you track it for over the entire month, you're going to see a small rise in that temperature.

Sometimes a degree or so, maybe a little bit more at times. And when you see that rise in temperature,it signals that you've actually completed ovulation. So if you track this for three to four months, and that temperature rises on day 16 every single month, then you're probably ovulating around day 14, so you can keep track of it that way.

  3. And the third way in which you can figure out when you're ovulating is by using an ovulation predictor test kit. So this is something you can get in the pharmacy. It's kind of like a pregnancy test. You pee in a cup, you dip it, and it'll tell you whether you are about to ovulate. The important thing about this test is it is going to tell you when you're about to ovulate, unlike the temperature, which tells you when you ovulated.

So this is an important distinction between these tests. If you are somebody who does not have regular periods, they're all over the place, very erratic, perhaps you have PCOS… then this is a perfect way to figure out when you're about to ovulate. When that test turns positive, you're about to ovulate in about twelve to 24 hours.

So these are the top three ways in which you can figure out when you are ovulating.
