New Tool To Detect Cancer EARLY!
Pancreatic Cancer, often described as a "Silent Killer," is notorious for its late diagnosis and poor prognosis. November, recognized as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, serves as a critical time to shed light on this aggressive form of cancer.
Why do I care about Pancreatic Cancer as a Gynecologist? There are several genes that women inherit that can play a role in the development of breast, ovarian, and Pancreatic Cancer. Not to mention that some of the symptoms can mimic gynecologic conditions.
Like ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer remains one of the most challenging cancers to diagnose early. Its symptoms are usually vague and non-specific, like abdominal pain or weight loss, often leading to late-stage diagnosis when the treatment options are limited. This delay significantly impacts survival rates, making awareness and early detection paramount.
For many years, we simply have not had options. While we still don't have a screening test, we do have something that CAN detect this deadly cancer early.
What is that you ask?
"The Galleri Test" This blood test, designed to detect FIFTY types of cancer, including pancreatic, works by identifying the unique DNA signatures of cancer cells circulating in the blood. The Galleri test's ability to detect these signatures before traditional symptoms become apparent offers a glimmer of hope for early intervention.
While the Galleri test is not a substitute for existing cancer screening methods, it complements them, and gives us one more tool in our arsenal to fight cancer.
There are only a handful of practices offering the test in the bay area, and I am proud to be offering it at Lamorinda Gynecology!
I am only offering it to patients of the practice. If you have an aunt, mom, sister, friend who wants it, they must establish at the practice and have an annual exam with me.
